The Portsmouth Hispanic Society offers presentations and discussions on a wide and eclectic range of Hispanic topics.
Something of interest to anyone interested in all aspects of Hispanic culture and life. We welcome visitors to any of our meetings.

The Aims of the Society

Society Activities

The main activities of the Society are Spanish language classes and the Monthly Meetings. The meetings are a social evening, with tapas,
accompanied a presentations or demonstration followed by discussions.

One or two external social events are also held during the year.

Our Monthly Meetings are open to anyone aged 18 or over and are conducted in English. Some Spanish may be spoken but will be translated.

Non-members are very welcome to attend any meeting. A small charge of £2.00 will be levied.

With the removal of Covid restrictions the society is returning to holding their monthly meeting at the Fratton Community Centre. Both Fratton Community Centre and the society will require members to be aware of, and follow, various rules, procedures and protocols, which are explained below:

Fratton Community Centre require masks to be worn in the communal areas – lobby, stairs, etc and appropriate distancing to be maintained in these areas. They will provide hand sanitiser.

Masks need not be worn in our meeting room, though sensible distancing should be observed. No doubt members will all want to be assured that those attending have had their two vaccinations. Sensible precautions mean that the tapas will be less extensive than in the past, but we will continue to offer a glass of wine or a soft drink, at least as long as bottles are donated!

Next Meeting: Thursday 7th October

To avoid delays at the meeting we invite you to begin or renew your membership beforehand using the Membership Application Form on this website. Having had a subscription holiday in 2020/2021 we need to reinstate subscriptions at £12 per person, or £6 for full time students; no increase from previous years. It will help greatly if payment can be by bank transfer; the Society bank account details can be found on the membership application form.

The Member's Area password will change at the beginning of September and will be circulated to members with their new name badge.

She will be giving us a personal view of Cali and Colombia from the inside and amongst other things, telling us about aspects of culture and daily life in the country. And no doubt salsa will get a mention!

Dash Arts, a charity partially funded by Arts Council England, has released a fascinating podcast about El Pacto del Olvido – Spain's 'pact of forgetting' the thousands of crimes suffered under Franco's dictatorship. The podcast's host speaks to filmmakers Almudena Carracedo and Robert Bahar about their documentary The Silence of Others, which reveals the struggle of Franco's victims as they seek justice.
