Spanish Language Tuition

September 2024 to August 2025

Language Tuition

The Society runs a number of very popular Spanish Language Courses and Conversation Groups for the benefit of our members.

Some of them are run by volunteers and therefore are free. The remainder will incur a reasonable cost. We believe that all our courses are very good value and provide excellent tuition and/or encouragement to engage in Spanish Conversation.

Courses and groups are specifically for adults only, who are members of Portsmouth Hispanic Society, so applicants who are not members already will need to join the Society before or at their first lesson. This is best done online. Please note that due to the popularity of the courses, membership of the Society does not guarantee a place on one of them; before joining the Society only in order to take lessons, please check first that there is a place for you on your chosen course

If you are studying Spanish at a college or elsewhere you are very welcome to join our Conversation groups, but we would prefer you to wait until you have finished your course before joining one of our more formal courses.

If you wish to apply for one of the following courses or groups please click on the link beside the course and fill in the application form. If you have any queries, or need help please email the language coodinator- email: language@spanishportsmouth.org.uk

Language Tutor

¡Hola! My name is Natalia and I come from Bilbao, a city in the north of Spain. I studied to be a primary school teacher and Educational Psychology at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Education has always been my passion. I came to Portsmouth in 2013 to study my last year of Psychology and since then I have worked as a Spanish teacher in many different contexts (Primary and secondary schools, one to one lessons, adult teaching in a language school, Spanish conversation group). Now I run all the Spanish lessons for the Portsmouth Hispanic Society and I am very happy to continue growing professionally doing something that I love.

¿Te animas a aprender Español conmigo?

Informal Conversation Groups

Cosham Conversation Group - Daytime

Sessions are standalone so regular attendance is not essential.

Wed 10:00-11:00 These sessions are free of charge and are held at the leader’s home in Cosham. Further details will be provided on application On-going all year although the leader is away about half the time. Group members may wish to meet together in his absence. Informal and fun group activities designed to get you talking Spanish to others and working with them. The focus is on speaking, listening and vocabulary rather than strict grammar. The group leader, Mike, is fortunate to spend a fair amount of time in Madrid with Spanish friends (when there is no pandemic!). You will need some prior knowledge of Spanish and you will also need to be prepared to have a go at talking in Spanish with others in a friendly and relaxed environment, although for your first session you are welcome just to listen. Native Spanish speakers are welcome to join the group, taking part in English.

Southsea Conversation Group - Daytime.

Sessions are standalone so regular attendance is not essential.

This group usually engages a native Spanish speaker as a helper and the cost is shared.

Fri 14:00-15:30 At the organiser's home in Southsea. Further details will be provided on application. On-going all the year. A mixed ability group. Meetings are informal and provide an opportunity to speak the Spanish language. We sometimes choose a topic for a meeting, though on the day we may talk about breaking news. All members participate, so you'll need to be able to speak Spanish, though you don't have to be fluent
